Companion for MS SQL Server 2005 Installation Instructions Prerequisites installation: Before you start the installation process, please make sure the following prerequisites are installed: Server Side: 1. Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 Client Side: 1. Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2008 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=CC96C246-61E5-4D9E-BB5F-416D75A1B9EF&displaylang=en) 2. Microsoft Management Console 3.0 The client software is utilizing MMC 3.0 and .net framework 2.0. If you have SP1 installed, then you already have the MMC 3.0 installed. If not, you can download it from: Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows XP (KB907265) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=61FC1C66-06F2-463C-82A2-CF20902FFAE0&displaylang=en) Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows Server 2003 (KB907265) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4C84F80B-908D-4B5D-8AA8-27B962566D9F&displaylang=en) MMC 3.0 update is available for Windows Server 2003 and for Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907265) You can find out which version of the MMC is installed on your computer by clicking Start, Run, type in MMC and hit enter. Then click on Help, About. The first line should say Microsoft Management Console 3.0 Companion for MS SQL Server installation: The installation of the Companion for MS SQL Server is a very straight forward process. There are three steps to the installation process: 1. Installing the Server and Client Side software 2. Configuring the MS SQL Server, the service and the client configuration (optional) 3. Obtaining License File and starting the "SQL Data Collection Service" on the SQL Server 1. The software consists of two setup files: Server side and Client side software. a) Server side setup - Run the Service Setup file on the server. During the setup select your MS SQL Server. Download links are below for the appropriate platform. The setup process will install the software locally and will place a copy of the database files in the installation folder. The service will not be started since there is no license file yet and it will not report any data. Configuring the server, adjusting the service configuration, adjusting the client configuration a) Configuring the "SQL Data Collection Service" The default configuration of the setup will be acceptable for most clients. However, to fine tune your installation, please review the configuration options in the config file. The configuration file for the "SQL Data Collection Service" is located at C:\Program Files\Enterprise Software Solutions\SQL Server Data Collection Service\SQLDataCollectionService.exe.config by default. All configuration options (keys) are documented in the config file itself. Please contact us with any questions. b) Configuring the client application The default configuration of the setup will be acceptable for most clients. However, to fine tune your installation, please review the configuration options in the config file. The configuration file for the MMC client application is located in c:\Program Files\ Enterprise Software Solutions \Companion for MS SQL Server\MSSQLCompanionMMC.dll.config by default. All configuration options (keys) are documented in the config file itself. Please contact us with any questions. 3. Obtaining License file and starting the SQL Data Collection Service After installing the client side application, Companion for MS SQL Server will show up on your desktop. Open it, right click on the "Companion for MS SQL Server" node and select "Add Server". Type in the name of your MS SQL Server or your MS SQL Server Instance. The client software will connect and will look for the License File. If you do not have the license file, or are requesting a 60-day evaluation, select that you do not have the file, and would like to obtain one online. Fill in the required information on the new screen that shows up, select the proper license that you are requesting (single or multi user). If you are paying by CC, type in the information and submit the order. The license file will automatically be downloaded to your system. If you are requesting a 60-day trial, select "Write License Request to File and email to licensing@entsoftsol.com". Type in one "4" and fifteen "1"s in the CC info fields (see example). Generate the license request file and email it to us. If you do not have Outlook email client installed, get the license request file from the default installation directory. We will issue a 60-day trial license and email it back to you. Once you obtain the license file from us, go through the same process, but this time select that you have the license file and browse to select it. Once you have obtained a license file, and have successfully connected to your server, make sure to right click on the "The License" node and select "Upload Current License to Database". This will store your license file in the database. Click on Services and start the "SQL Data Collection Service". Please allow a few days for the software to gather statistical and baseline information.
